CAPACITY BUILDING PROJECT

Following a training needs analysis of SAAF; a capacity building programme was devised by a consultant. The programme is designed to strengthen the ability of SAAF to build its structures, systems, people, and skills to enable it to better define its objectives and engage in consultation, planning, development and management.

Phase one of the project was funded by Awards for All, Lottery funding, and was completed in 2006. This included group sessions for all committee members and Trustees with a training consultant, Peter Lush Associates. Also included were individual training sessions for the Treasurer, HIVAIDS courses for executive committee members, and other personal development courses.

Phase two of the project was funded by Awards for All and was completed in October 2008. Phase two of the programme dealt with business planning, and technical knowledge. Training was designed to increase SAAF members’ ability to carry out the organisational aims, which include enabling people living with HIV to have a better quality of life by increasing their social interaction with others and the public in general, without fear of stigmatisation.

Phase three of the project was funded by the Terence Higgins Trust (THT) and delivered by Equinox Consulting. The programme covered Committee Skills, business planning, and objective setting.

Further training is planned for new and existing regional committees to cover the following:

Group Training Sessions   (Committee skills)- Partnership working, project management and accounting, managing yourself, community development.

Group Training Sessions (Management) - Recruitment & selection, Managing and supervising staff, motivating & retaining volunteers.

Consultancy – Business Planning, Fundraising strategy.

Individual training sessions - HIV/AIDS courses, committee skills.

In addition to the costs of the trainers and consultants, other project costs include the of hiring training venues, delegates’ travelling costs and childcare costs, as well as costs for training materials, photocopying, refreshments and public liability insurance.
